Ascenseur à bateaux
The lift was built in the 1880s to enable barges to overcome the 13-metre difference in height on the Neuffossé canal. The manoeuvre, controlled from the cabin at the top of the central tower, required 6 men and took 20 minutes. The Fontinettes lift was in operation until 1967. A unique work of art in France, it was listed as a Historic Monument in 2014.
Restoration of the structure has enabled visitors to discover the site through a guided tour. Today, visit the repair workshop, stroll along the towpath and discover the way of life of the bargemen on board a Freycinet barge.
In 2025, for individuals and groups alike, the audio-guided tour of the interpretation centre could be complemented by a guided tour of the outside environment of the Fontinettes Boat Lift. Flash tours and educational workshops are also available (for holidays and school groups).
Open from 01/04/2025 to 02/11/2025, on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 6pm. In July and August: open 7 days a week.
Prices and further information by phone, e-mail and on the monument's website.
